The use of colors in van Gogh’s paintings and some other relating paintings is scientifically investigated through a quantitative analysis in the CIELUV color space. Pixel data of the digitized images of paintings are decomposed into the RGB color space and then converted into the CIELUV color space. The plots in the latter color space are analyzed morphologically and/or statistically to clarify characteristic features of the use of colors in specific creative periods of the painter.

A new technique for the particle depth and size determination is implemented and tested by using synthetic as well as experimental hologram images. The particle depth and size are detected by geometric measures of the particle signal peak in the reconstructed images. Performance tests are carried out with different holograms patterns consisting of different sizes particles and overlapping interference fringes.

An ant colony optimization (ACO) based stereoscopic particle matching algorithm has been developed for three-dimensional (3-D) particle tracking velocimetry (PTV). In stereoscopic particle pairing process, each individual particle in the left camera frame should be uniquely paired with the most probable correct partner in the right camera frame or vice-versa for evaluating the exact 3-D coordinate of the particles. In the present work, a new algorithm based on an ant colony optimization has been proposed for this stereoscopic particle matching.

A new improved ant colony optimization based algorithm has been developed for temporal particle matching in 2-D and 3-D particle tracking velocimetry. The improvement is mainly achieved due to the revision of the selection probability and pheromone update formulae devised specially for the purpose of accurate and fast computation. In addition, the new algorithm also provides better matching results when dealing with the loss-of-pair particles, a typical problem in the real image particle tracking velocimetry. The performance of the new improved algorithm is tested with 2-D and 3-D standard particle images with successful results.

The paper presents a technique of depth measurement for the detection of the depth of small tracer particles distributed in 3-D space. This technique is based on in-line holography and the depth of the particles is measured using the numerically reconstructed images obtained from the convolution based Fresnel Reconstruction formula. The particle depth is measured by determining the distribution of light intensity within a proper rectangular sampling window around the test particle. The sample median, mean and minimum value approach is employed as an averaging technique for the light intensity measured at all pixels within that rectangular sampling window and the position on the z-axis where all these values are minimum is regarded as the depth of that particular test particle.

Camera calibration determines the parameters which maps 3D points of a certain scene or object into their corresponding 2D projections onto the image plane of the camera. Many camera calibration techniques have been developed with or without including lens distortion. In the present research the authors have used calibration method with lens distortion for 3-D particle tracking velocimetry. The performance of calibration algorithm was tested with 3-D PIV Standard Images from the PIV Standard Image project of Visualization Society of Japan.

The authors have already proposed a new PTV algorithm using the ant colony optimization. But from the viewpoint of its principle, this method is not only valid as a particle tracking algorithm but also applicable to the PIV-PTV hybrid scheme in which the PTV vector results are used recursively for validating the PIV vector results. In this perspective, the authors try to implement a new PIV-PTV hybrid method where the standard cross correlation PIV is followed by the ant colony optimization PTV, from the results of which the primary PIV vector results are recursively validated.

A new concept algorithm based on the ant colony optimization is developed for the use in 2-D and 3-D particle tracking velocimetry (PTV). In the particle matching process of PTV, the ant colony optimization is usually aimed at minimization of the sum of the distances between the first-frame and second-frame particles. But this type of minimization often goes unsuccessfully in the regions where the particles are located very close to each other. In order to avoid this flaw, a new type of minimization is attempted using a physical property corresponding to the flow consistency or the quasi-rigidity of particle distribution patterns.

The simulated annealing (SA) algorithm has been considered for the particle matching process of the particle tracking velocimetry (PTV). Simulated annealing is a generic probabilistic metaheuristic for the global optimization problem. The major advantage of this algorithm over other methods is the ability to avoid becoming trapped at local minima and therefore it may be suitable for more precise particle matching than the other global optimization algorithms. As far as the simulated annealing algorithm is concerned, the two key factors considered in the present study are the scheduling (cooling) strategy and the transfer method to new energy states. With some elaborations on these two factors, the simulated annealing algorithm will turn out to be very effective for matching a large number of distributed particles up to 1000.

Digital holography (DH), the next-generation technology for holographic diagnostics of particle fields, is the direct recording of the Fresnel or Fourier holograms using a CCD or CMOS camera. In this paper, the authors present the numerical reconstruction process based on the Fresnel (Fourier) transform and Convolution schemes using a simple digital in-line holography recording setup. In addition, a comparison between both of these numerical reconstruction procedures is also discussed. The complex amplitude information available from these reconstructed waves not only eliminates the speckles noise problem intrinsic to in-line digital holography but also when used in particle extraction, improves the particle axial-location accuracy compared with other optical reconstruction.

The PTV data processing techniques to obtain the velocity vectors is not free from the possibility of outliers. These outliers degrade the quantitative information of the velocity field and gives misleading information of velocity based quantities like vorticity. As an outliers detection technique the authors propose here the use of the fuzzy logic. The PTV matching results are provided as input to the fuzzy logic processor and the rule based fuzzy logic processor works with some reliable membership assignment techniques. The vectors are considered valid on the basis of the multiple components of constraint of coherence of particle motion. This module is tested for different type of flows. The test results show that the algorithm is effective to reject the outliers while preserving the true vectors in the final output.

been performed to investigate turbulent flows in a curved
open channel. The 3-D PIV system is combined with a
laser sheet scanning facility (LSS) which is capable of 3C-

The wake of two circular cylinders in tandem arrangement is investigated by 2D and 3D PIV experiments in a towing water channel. The spacing parameter of the two cylinders L/d (the ratio of the cylinder separation to the cylinder diameter) is varied from 2.0 to 12.0 at Reynolds numbers ranging from 100 to 300.

The ant colony optimization (ACO) based algorithm has been already applied effectively and successfully to the particle pairing process of 2-D and 3-D particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) by the present authors. In the present study, the algorithm has been further improved for reduced computation time but with the same level of accuracy as that of the authors’ previous ACO algorithm.

A data validation technique for 3-D particle tracking velocimetry is proposed. Rule based fuzzy logic system has
been used. In the proposed scheme, the PTV pairing results will be provided as an input to the validating system.
Then, velocity vectors of the particles in the neighborhood are measured, in terms of velocity gradient, direction and
magnitude.

Digital holography appears to be the next-generation technology for holographic diagnostics of particle fields and has been applied to holographic particle tracking flow measurements. In the digital holography, the Fresnel or Fourier holograms are recorded directly by the CCD or CMOS cameras and stored digitally. No film material involving wet-chemical or other processing is necessary as in optical holography.

A new concept genetic algorithm has been implemented and tested for the use in the 2-D and 3-D Particle Tracking Velocimetry. The algorithm is applicable to particle images with larger (greater than 2000) number of particles without losing the excellent accuracy in the particle matching results.

In Particle Image Velocimetry, a pulsed laser light sheet is used to illuminate a flow field seeded with tracer particles and at each instance of illumination, the positions of the particles are recorded on digital CCD cameras. The displacement of individual particles thus determined gives the velocity information if divided by known time interval. The accuracy as well as efficiency of such measurement systems depend upon the reliability of the algorithms to track those particles. In the present work, a cellular neural network based algorithm has been proposed. Performance test has been carried out using the standard flow images. It performs well in comparison to the existing algorithms in terms of reliability, accuracy and processing time.

The neural network techniques used in PTV, which are otherwise well, are prone to fall into local optimum due to random initialization of the unit values and thus yield the erroneous vector pairs. To overcome this problem, the authors have suggested here a methodology based on Fuzzy c-Means algorithms. The test results show that the proposed strategy seems robust for the varying number of particles in the image frames.

This is important because the 3-D coordinates of individual particles cannot be computed without the knowledge of the correct stereo correspondence of the particles. In the present work, a neural network-based algorithm has been proposed for the stereoscopic particle pairing process.

The wake of two circular cylinders in tandem arrangement is investigated by 2D and 3D PIV experiments using a towing water channel and a circulating water tank. The 2-D PIV is conducted in a horizontal cross section normal to the axes of the cylinders and the 3-D PIV is in the vertical cross section locating on the cylinder axes. The main objective of the study is to investigate the characteristic features of the downstream wake changing considerably with the spacing parameter L/d.

A fuzzy logic based validation scheme has been proposed for the PTV particle tracking process. Input parameters similar to those used in physical constraint conditions of neural networks have been used as input parameters for the fuzzy logic based processor. The basic assumption on which the fuzzy processor works here is that the velocity vector of any particle in the first frame is similar in direction and magnitude to the velocity vector of the particle physically nearest to it. The results are tested with different particle images with notable performance achieved.

Color expressions of Japanese block prints and Vincent van Gogh's paintings are investigated by a digital vectorscope and waveform analyzer analyzing digital reproduction of the original paintings. Test examples are taken from the representatives of the 18th to 19th century Japanese block prints and early to late oil paintings by Vincent van Gogh. The results are then compared in terms of the similarity of hue and chroma distribution pattern between sample pairs of block print and oil painting. A strong similarity is indicated between some of the van Gogh’s late paintings and some of the Japanese block prints.

Color and luminance expression of artistic master paintings is investigated by a digital vector scope and a wave form analyzer working on the digital reproduction of the original paintings. Examples are taken from the representatives of the 19th century Rococo-romantic school, the Romantic school, the early and late Impressionist schools including the Pointism and Symbolism paintings. The PIV velocity vectors are always prone to outliers. The outliers degrade the quantitative information of the velocity field and gives misleading information of velocity based quantities like vorticity, streamlines, divergence etc. In this paper, a novel technique based on rule-based fuzzy logic has been proposed for the detection of such outliers. This technique overcomes the limitation of most of the detection techniques which are based on simple type of nearest neighborhood similarity constraint. The methodology is demonstrated to different PTV results.
